Installation Tips and Critical Safety Info
Replacing these drums requires specific steps to ensure the new bearings are not damaged during the process.
One-Time Use Nut: Ford specifies that the 30mm rear axle nut is a one-time use component. Always install a new nut (not included in most drum-only kits) to ensure it maintains the proper locking tension.
Torque Procedure: The axle nut must be torqued to 173–175 ft-lbs. While tightening, it is critical to rotate the drum to ensure the bearing rollers seat correctly and do not "brinell" (dent) the race, which leads to premature bearing noise.
Clean the Spindle: Before sliding the new drum on, use a wire brush to clean the spindle stub shaft and apply a light coat of high-temperature grease to aid installation.
Check the Shoes: Since the drums are being replaced, inspect your brake shoes and hardware. If the shoes are thin or the hardware is rusted, replacing them now will prevent premature wear on your new drums.
