Engine Crankshaft Harmonic Balancer

Vibration Damper for Chrysler, Dodge, and Plymouth V6 & V8 Engines

This engine harmonic balancer (crankshaft pulley damper) is engineered to absorb crankshaft torsional vibrations and ensure the smooth operation of your engine's rotating assembly. Constructed with a high-quality nodular iron hub and a durable elastomer bonding agent, this unit is a direct replacement for the factory damper on Chrysler Small Block engines, including the 3.9L V6, 5.2L (318) V8, and specific early 5.5L (340) V8 models.

Fitment Verification and Vehicle Applications

This balancer is primarily designed for internally balanced Mopar engines. Please verify your production date for 1972 models, as timing marks or balance weights may differ.

  • Chrysler Models (318 V8): 1975–1983 Cordoba, 1979–1989 Fifth Avenue/New Yorker (RWD), 1977–1981 LeBaron, and 1979–1981 Newport.

  • Dodge Trucks & Vans (3.9L V6 / 5.2L V8): 1972–1991 D/W Series Pickups (D100-W300), 1987–1991 Dakota, 1974–1991 Ramcharger, and 1972–1991 B-Series Vans.

  • Dodge Passenger Cars (318 V8): 1972–1974 Challenger, 1972–1978 Charger, 1972–1976 Dart, 1977–1989 Diplomat, and 1980–1983 Mirada.

  • Plymouth Models (318 V8): 1972–1974 Barracuda, 1980–1989 Gran Fury, 1972–1976 Valiant, 1976–1980 Volare, and 1974–1981 Trailduster.

  • Special Fitment (340 V8): 1972 Charger, Dart, Barracuda, and Valiant built before 4/11/1972.

Technical Specifications and Attributes

A worn harmonic balancer can cause accelerated bearing wear and belt squeal. This replacement restores factory-level dampening.

  • Material: High-Strength Steel / Nodular Iron.

  • Inertia Ring: Precision-bonded rubber insulator for maximum dampening.

  • Balance: Neutral / Internal Balance (Verify against your engine's specific flywheel/torque converter setup).

  • Finish: Corrosion-resistant black coating.

Reference Part Numbers

  • Chrysler (OE): 3614369, 3751160, 4173443, 53020229

Installation and Maintenance Tips

  • Proper Tools: Do not use a hammer or a standard gear puller to install or remove the balancer. A dedicated Harmonic Balancer Puller and Installer tool is required to prevent damage to the crankshaft threads and thrust bearings.

  • Inspection: If the rubber ring between the inner hub and outer ring is cracked, bulging, or dry-rotted, the balancer is failing and needs immediate replacement to avoid engine damage.

  • Timing Marks: Before removing the old unit, verify that the timing mark on the balancer aligns with Top Dead Center (TDC) on your timing cover. Over time, the outer ring can "slip" on the rubber, leading to inaccurate ignition timing readings.

  • Keyway Alignment: Ensure the woodruff key on the crankshaft is in good condition and properly aligned with the keyway slot on the new balancer during installation.
