Installation and Technical Tips
Mandatory Alignment: Replacing the tie rod assemblies completely resets your vehicle's toe settings. A professional four-wheel alignment is required immediately following installation to prevent rapid tire wear and ensure the steering wheel is centered.
Initial Length Setting: Before removing your old units, measure the center-to-center distance of the ball joints. Adjust the new assemblies to match this length as closely as possible before installation. This "rough alignment" will make the vehicle safe enough to drive to a professional alignment shop.
Taper Seat Cleaning: Use a wire brush to remove any rust or debris from the tapered holes in the steering knuckle and the center link. A clean taper is essential for the ball joint to seat properly and maintain the correct torque.
Hardware Inspection: While the steering linkage is disassembled, inspect the Center Drag Link and the Idler Arm Bushing. In many Mercedes-Benz W201 models, these components wear out at a similar rate to the tie rods; replacing them together will provide the best possible steering feel.
