Engine Knock Detonation Sensor

Critical Ignition Component for Chevrolet and GMC Big Block V8 Engines

This engine knock sensor is a high-precision tuned piezo-electric sensor designed to detect abnormal vibration (engine knock or "pinging") caused by pre-ignition. When the sensor detects these vibrations, it sends a signal to the Engine Control Module (ECM) to retard ignition timing, protecting your high-displacement 7.4L (454) or 8.1L (496) engine from internal damage.

Fitment Verification and Vehicle Applications

This sensor is specifically calibrated for the unique harmonic frequencies of the GM Big Block V8 family. It is most commonly found on heavy-duty trucks, commercial chassis, and large SUVs.

  • Chevrolet & GMC C6500/C7500 Kodiak/Topkick: 1999–2009 (7.4L and 8.1L V8).

  • Chevrolet Express & GMC Savana 3500: 2001–2002 (8.1L V8).

  • Chevrolet P30 & GMC P3500 Chassis: 1998–1999 (7.4L V8).

This sensor is a direct-fit replacement for the following manufacturer and aftermarket part numbers:

  • General Motors (OE): 10456500, 12591312

  • Standard Motor Products: KS112, KS-112, KS112S

  • Wells / Airtex: 5S2179, SU1322

  • ACDelco: 213-3240, 213-3521

Installation and Diagnostic Tips

  • Common Trouble Codes: A faulty knock sensor will typically trigger a P0327 (Low Input) or P0332 (Low Input, Bank 2) Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC).

  • Torque Sensitivity: The sensor is a microphone-like device. It is extremely sensitive to how tight it is installed. Over-tightening can crush the internal crystal, while under-tightening will result in a weak signal. Always follow the factory torque specification (usually 15 lb-ft or 20 Nm).

  • Thread Preparation: Do not use thread tape (Teflon tape) on the sensor threads, as the sensor requires a solid metal-to-metal ground to the engine block to function. Some sensors come with a pre-applied conductive sealant.

  • Harness Inspection: On 8.1L engines, the knock sensor harness is often exposed to extreme heat. Inspect the connector and wiring for brittleness or melting before installing the new sensor to ensure a reliable electrical path.
